Finders Keepers: English II (2/08) External Reading

1. What does the name of the short story mean?
“Finders keepers” is a shortened version of “Finders keepers, losers weepers.” It is an expression used mostly by children; when a child finds an object that he/she wants to keep for him-/herself, the child will then say this expression to tell other children that he/she gets to keep it because he/she found it.

2. What does this name have to do with the story?
The main character in this story is Harry Chen (the story takes place in Singapore again), who taught archaeology at a university—and who liked to keep (steal) old things that people found or dug up. One day, he accidentally found an old, hidden magic whistle that could make everything stay still—even time. So Harry Chen kept the whistle and used it to steal other things he wanted. He was successful in doing it, too.

You’ll have to read the whole story to see how he used it and what happened at the end of the story by yourself.
